Heat Tempering

Cat-i Glass' fabrication processes can heat strengthen or fully temper glass. Typical strengthened glass can be up to 3 times stronger while fully tempered will be 3-5 times stronger than annealed glass.

Fully tempered glass is also called safety glass because when broken, it will dice into small pieces.

Cat-i heat tempered glass is processed in accordance with the Federal Specification ASTM C1048, which sets required standards for surface compression of fully tempered glass, warp, and break patterns.

Glass is heated during the manufacturing process and then cooled rapidly.  This process freezes the outer surfaces in compression which in turn pulls the core of the glass under tension.

  • Soda lime and low iron can be fully tempered and heat strengthened.
  • Borosilicate glass can only be heat strengthened due to its lower coefficient of expansion.
